The Ubiquiti Vape Detection & Air Quality Sensor is an internal PoE sensor for the UniFi Protect system, designed for environmental monitoring and e-cigarette vapor detection. The device measures AQI, CO2, particulate matter (PM1.0/2.5/4/10), VOCs, temperature, and humidity.
Ubiquiti Vape Detection & Air Quality Sensor – Air Quality Sensor and E-Cigarette Detector
Ubiquiti Vape Detection & Air Quality Sensor (UP-AirQuality) is a PoE-powered internal sensor designed to continuously monitor air parameters and instantly detect e-cigarette (vape) smoke. It's an ideal solution for schools, offices, hotels, and commercial properties that want to ensure the health of their occupants and effectively enforce smoking bans. The device provides real-time data to the UniFi Protect system and also provides information on air quality via a built-in, multi-color LED ring that changes color continuously.
The sensor analyzes the environment, measuring temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matter (PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4, PM10), and volatile organic compounds (TVOC and VOC). Based on this data, it calculates the overall air quality index (AQI) and the e-cigarette detection index. All communication and power supply for the device (maximum power consumption is just 2.2W) are handled via a single Ethernet cable (10/100 Mbps) connected to a PoE switch.
To achieve the most accurate measurements, the manufacturer recommends varying installation heights depending on monitoring priorities. For optimal e-cigarette detection, the sensor should be mounted at a height of 2-2.5 meters in smaller or partially enclosed spaces. Avoid locations near strong airflows and sources of other aerosols (air fresheners, humidifiers, cleaning products) to minimize the risk of false alarms. For the most accurate CO2 and general air quality measurements, the optimal mounting height is 1–1.5 meters in high-traffic areas, away from windows, ventilation grilles, and heat sources.
Note: A management console with UniFi Protect software is required for configuration and data reading.
Key Features:
-
E-cigarette Detection: Quickly detects vapor from electronic cigarettes in enclosed spaces.
-
Air Analysis: Precise measurements of CO2, particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM4, PM10), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), temperature, and humidity.

Ubiquiti Vape Detection & Air Quality sensor - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
The Vape Detection & Air Quality sensor is a PoE-powered internal sensor Designed for indoor environmental monitoring applications, it continuously tracks key air quality parameters and provides instant visual feedback via a multi-color LED ring, as well as centralized data access via Ethernet.
The sensor monitors a comprehensive set of indoor air quality indicators, including:
- Temperature
- Relative Humidity
- Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
- Particulate Matter / Dust (PM1.0 / PM2.5 / PM4 / PM10)
- Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC)
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC Index)
- Air Quality Index (AQI)
- E-Cigarette Detection
Index values are used as measures based on sensor signals and standardsmodels that reflect relative changes in air quality over time, rather than precise chemical concentrations.
The sensor is powered and connected exclusively via PoE, ensuring a stable connection supporting consistent data reporting and reliable operation. A UniFi console running the UniFi Protect app is required to adopt and manage the sensor.
Accuracy depends on the specific parameter and environmental conditions. The sensor is designed for reliable indoor monitoring and trend analysis, i.e., tracking air quality changes over time. For the most reliable readings, place the sensor in an open, well-ventilated area that reflects typical indoor conditions – avoid wall corners, enclosed spaces, direct sunlight, heat sources, and other locations with limited airflow.
Sensor readings are constantly updated and transmitted over the network in near real time, allowing for immediate response and alert generation.
Sensor data is best interpreted over a longer time horizon. This allows users to identify trends, repeating patterns, and environmental changes, rather than relying solely on single, spot readings.
To ensure reliable e-cigarette detection, the sensor should be installed at a height of 2-2.5 m in smaller or semi-enclosed spaces, away from direct airflows. In enclosed spaces, the sensor can typically detect e-cigarette use within a few meters of the source. Exact performance depends on the room size and ventilation level.
To minimize the risk of false alarms, avoid installing the sensor near sources of airborne aerosols or vapors, including:
- Air fresheners and fragrance diffusers
- Aerosol sprays and cleaning products
- Humidifiers and vapor sources
- Areas where dust or particulate matter is frequently generated
The sensor performs best in locations where vaping is most likely and where airflow does not dilute or rapidly redirect particles before they reach the sensor.
To obtain accurate indoor air quality measurements, the sensor should be installed at a height of 1–1.5 m in an area where people occupied it, away from vents, windows, and heat sources.
