Ubiquiti UniFi 5G Backup – 5G/LTE Backup Modem
Ubiquiti UniFi 5G Backup (U5G) is a compact, PoE-powered cellular modem designed to provide a backup internet connection (failover). The device is based on the modern 5G RedCap (Reduced Capability) architecture. Instead of maximizing peak throughput, this technology focuses on the highest connection stability and low latency, which is crucial for backup connections. The device achieves speeds of up to 220 Mbps for downloads and up to 120 Mbps for uploads. Unlike the more expensive UniFi 5G Max model (which serves as the main high-bandwidth link), the U5G is dedicated solely to maintaining network continuity in emergency situations.
Power and communication are provided via a single Gigabit Ethernet (PoE) port. If the device is connected to a LAN port, it can be powered directly from a PoE switch. If connected to a router's WAN port, a standard PoE adapter (not included) is required. The set includes accessories for mounting on a desk, wall, and window, allowing you to optimally position the modem relative to cellular network coverage.
Note: The device does not operate standalone - it must be adopted by a main router from the UniFi Cloud Gateway or UniFi Gateway series.
Key features:
-
Purpose: Automatic Backup link (failover) operating within the UniFi ecosystem (requires a UniFi Gateway router).
-
Connectivity technology: 5G RedCap network support (requires 5G SA) with automatic failover to LTE.
-
SIM cards: Integrated support for a physical Nano SIM card (4FF) and a built-in eSIM (Dual SIM Single Standby).
-
Single-Cable Power: Power consumption is entirely handled by the Gigabit Ethernet (PoE) port.
-
Built-in Display: Small, 1.14-inch display for quick connection status viewing.

Ubiquiti UniFi 5G Backup - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
UniFi 5G Backup is a 5G cellular modem designed to provide reliable failover internet access for any UniFi Cloud Gateway or UniFi Gateway. Built on 5G RedCap technology, it ensures the network remains online during a primary internet service provider outage by leveraging a powerful 5G architecture optimized for always-on backup connectivity.
5G RedCap (Reduced Capability) is a cellular standard designed to bridge the gap between the older 4G LTE technology and high-performance 5G. While "standard" 5G focuses on achieving extreme gigabit speeds, RedCap prioritizes 5G's key strengths: reliability and lower latency. Its simpler hardware architecture makes it an ideal replacement for ULTE devices in applications like network backup, where maintaining a constant connection is more important than achieving maximum throughput.
Note for EU users: 5G RedCap technology only works on 5G Standalone (SA) networks, and many European operators currently only support it with specific business/enterprise plans. If the 5G SA/RedCap network is not supported by your local carrier or SIM card, the device will automatically switch to high-throughput LTE mode, providing the same stable reliability expected from our LTE backup line.
UniFi 5G Backup is designed with stability and connection continuity in mind. While 5G RedCap technology allows for higher theoretical throughputs, real-world performance typically ranges from 30 to 80 Mbps for downloads and 10 to 20 Mbps for uploads, depending on carrier signal strength and network load.
- Core Technology: UniFi 5G Backup uses 5G RedCap technology to deliver efficient, optimized connection, while UniFi 5G Max uses the full 5G standard for maximum performance.
- Application: Choose UniFi 5G Backup if you need business continuity and an always-on backup link. Choose UniFi 5G Max if you need a fast, primary WAN link or process very large amounts of data.
- Purpose: UniFi 5G Backup emphasizes balanced power and hardware efficiency in emergency scenarios, while UniFi 5G Max focuses on delivering the full power and throughput of the entire 5G spectrum.
The power supply method depends on how the device is connected to the network:
- When connected to a LAN: The device can be powered from any PoE switch or an external PoE power supply (not included).
- When connected directly to the WAN port: The device must be powered using a PoE adapter/power supply (not included) before connecting it directly to the gateway's WAN port.
Yes. UniFi 5G Backup offers Dual SIM Single SIM functionality.andby (DSSS): Has one (1) external physical nano-SIM card slot and one (1) built-in internal eSIM card slot.
No. The UniFi 5G Backup must be adopted by the UniFi Cloud Gateway console or UniFi Gateway – it cannot function as a fully independent, standalone network device.
