Ubiquiti UniFi 5G Max Outdoor (U5G-Max-Outdoor)
UniFi 5G Max Outdoor (U5G-Max-Outdoor) is an outdoor 5G cellular modem designed to operate as a WAN interface within the UniFi ecosystem. The device works exclusively with a UniFi Cloud Gateway or UniFi Gateway and cannot operate independently as a router or modem. Network integration is provided via a 2.5 GbE Ethernet port, while management and configuration are performed through the UniFi Network application.
The modem supports Sub-6 GHz 5G NR networks in both SA and NSA modes and is backward compatible with 4G LTE and 3G UMTS networks. Dual SIM support includes one nanoSIM and a second nanoSIM or eSIM, enabling automatic failover in case of primary connection loss. The device operates in Dual SIM Single Standby (DSSS) mode, with only one SIM active at any given time.
UniFi 5G Max Outdoor is engineered for outdoor deployment. The enclosure provides IPX6 environmental protection, and an IP67 rating can be achieved using the included cable-gland sealing kit. The device is equipped with an integrated high-gain directional antenna operating on the n77/n78 bands, improving signal reception and connection stability in outdoor environments. Power is supplied exclusively via PoE.

U5G-Max-Outdoor – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
UniFi 5G Max Outdoor is a high-performance 5G modem designed to extend any UniFi Cloud Gateway or UniFi Gateway with cellular connectivity, specifically engineered for outdoor deployments. It supports dual SIM (two physical SIM slots) or two eSIM profiles. This enables seamless failover for critical applications.
The power method depends on how the device is connected:
- For LAN connections: power the device using any PoE switch or a PoE adapter (not included).
- For WAN connections: power the device using a PoE adapter (not included). A direct connection to the gateway is required.
Yes. UniFi 5G Max Outdoor supports eSIM, allowing connectivity to supported carriers without a physical SIM card. Instructions for activating eSIM can be found in the UniFi 5G Max Outdoor Setup Guide.
Important note for T-Mobile users: T-Mobile Home Internet SIM cards are not supported – a data-only plan is required.
Using a physical nano-SIM is recommended. If eSIM is used, a manual activation code must be requested, as T-Mobile does not provide QR codes by default. The QR code must be emailed by a customer service representative.
Incompatibility errors: T-Mobile systems may incorrectly flag UniFi 5G Max as incompatible due to a database issue. The representative should be asked to disregard the error and proceed with issuing the activation code.
UniFi 5G Max Outdoor supports dual SIM functionality in Dual SIM Single Standby (DSSS) mode, where only one SIM is active at a time:
Option 1: (1) external SIM (SIM1) + (1) embedded eSIM (SIM2)
Option 2: (2) external SIMs (SIM1 and SIM2)
This configuration enables automatic failover, ensuring continuous and reliable connectivity.
No. UniFi 5G Max Outdoor cannot operate independently. It must be adopted by a UniFi Cloud Gateway or UniFi Gateway.
UniFi 5G Max is an LTE/5G modem that connects to a UniFi Gateway through any LAN port and passes the carrier’s IP address directly to the gateway. The UMR series (UniFi Mobile Routers) are standalone LTE-to-Wi-Fi routers that allow direct device connections without a UniFi Gateway.
UniFi 5G Max should be selected when reliable, high-performance WAN connectivity and seamless backup internet are required for a UniFi network without changing IP addressing. A mobile router is more suitable for small deployments or low-traffic environments such as small offices, kiosks, or home installations.
In most installations, LAN adoption provides the greatest flexibility in physical placement and wired connectivity while still supporting Teleport (remote VPN access) with most carriers. WAN adoption is recommended when the cellular carrier assigns a public IP address and remote access to services hosted behind the Cloud Gateway, such as a VPN server, is required.
To adopt via WAN, connect UniFi U5G Max Outdoor using a PoE injector or a remapped PoE WAN port on the Cloud Gateway, then complete the adoption process in the UniFi Network application or the UniFi mobile app.
UniFi 5G Max Outdoor is specifically designed for outdoor deployments and differs from the indoor version in two key aspects:
- Reinforced weather-resistant enclosure rated IPX6; when using the included cable-gland kit, the protection rating increases to IP67.
- Integrated high-gain directional antenna operating on n77 (3.3–4.2 GHz) and n78 (3.3–3.8 GHz) bands, improving 5G signal reception.
UniFi 5G Max Outdoor supports Sub-6 GHz 5G networks and is backward compatible with 4G/LTE networks, providing high data throughput and low latency for modern applications.
For optimal performance, it is recommended to determine the location of nearby carrier base stations and mount the device on the side of the building facing the carrier’s tower.
